How to Replace a Water Valve in a Kenmore Front Loader

Kenmore front loader washing machines use a water valve connected to the hot and cold hoses at the back of the appliance. The valve is attached to an electronic device known as a solenoid, which receives signals from the cycle timer directing the valve to open and close. Replacing the valve in this appliance involves removing the entire valve and solenoid assembly to install a new unit available from Sears, which sells Kenmore washers, or an appliance parts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power plug on the Kenmore from wall outlet.

    • 2

Shut off the two faucets where the hoses from the back of the Kenmore connect to the wall taps.

    • 3

Unscrew the two hoses from the back of the appliance and lower them into a bucket to drain.

    • 4

Press the two ends on the clamp around the drain hose where it connects to the back of the appliance. This releases the clamp so you can pull off the hose and set the end in the bucket.

    • 5

Extract the screws around the edges of the metal cover plate to remove the plate off the back of the appliance. The valve assembly includes the two short pipes where the water hoses connect to the back of the appliance.

    • 6

Squeeze the ends on the clamp holding the hose on the end of the valve to pull off this hose.

    • 7

Slip off the pair of wires that slide onto the terminals on the top of the valve.

    • 8

Remove the screws in the support mounts that hold the valve in place inside the appliance. Take out the entire valve assembly.

    • 9

Hold the new valve assembly in position and secure it with the screws.

    • 10

Slip the wires onto their respective terminals on the new valve.

    • 11

Secure the rubber hose to the pipe on the side of the valve with the clamp.

    • 12

Reattach the cover plate using the screws.

    • 13

Connect the two supply hoses with pliers to the intake pipes on the new valve. These pipes extend through the two holes in the back cover plate.

    • 14

Reconnect the drain pipe with the clamp

    • 15

Plug in the power cord and open the two water taps on the wall.
