How to Fix a Dishwasher Vent

A dishwasher vent is also known as an air gap. It is connected to the sink next to the dishwasher and is usually positioned right behind the faucet. The little hole in the air gap vents air into the system, which prevents water from getting siphoned out of the dishwasher during operation due to suction. Air gaps are very simple devices, but they are vital for a dishwasher to function properly. If they become clogged, air can't enter through the vent and the dishwasher experiences problems. Fixing a dishwasher vent or air gap requires some basic materials to eliminate clogs.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the air gap from the top of the sink behind the faucet. Flush it out under the faucet and clean it with liquid dish soap to remove buildup and blockages.

    • 2

Unhook the rubber hose connecting the dishwasher to the garbage disposal. A clamp holds the hose connection to the garbage disposal, and it should unscrew. Check the hose for blockages, because they prevent the air gap from working properly. Use a screwdriver to pull out any debris.

    • 3

Place the end of the hose into a bucket and run the dishwasher so water flows through the hose and into the bucket. The hose helps remove more debris that was interfering with venting. Reattach the hose once you're finished. The air gap should work normally now and vent properly again.
