How to Remove the Shell of a Maytag Bravos

The Whirlpool Corporation manufactures a line of energy-efficient, residential washing machines under the Maytag brand name. The Maytag Bravos is a Whirlpool-built, high-efficiency, top-loading washer with multiple automatic washing cycles and temperature settings. If your Maytag Bravos washer malfunctions, there's no need to start shopping for a new washer just yet. Remove the shell of the washer to troubleshoot, repair or replace any malfunctioning internal components. Although the idea of removing a washer shell may sound intimidating to novice do-it-yourselfers, the removal process is straightforward and requires no previous experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer's power cord from the wall outlet. Move the washer away from the wall so you can access the rear of the appliance.

    • 2

Reach behind the control console and remove the three hex-head screws that hold the console to the top of the washer shell. Lift the control console off the top of the washer and set it aside.

    • 3

Fit the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the notches in front of the large clips on the top of the washer shell. Push the clips forward with the tip of the screwdriver to release them.

    • 4

Unplug the wires from the lid switch assembly located on the top of the washer, where the control console would sit if attached. Pull firmly on the plastic wiring connector, rather than the wires themselves.

Open the washer lid. Grip the front edge of the washer opening firmly and rock the shell toward you. Slide the shell forward to clear the retaining tabs on the base of the washer. Lift the washer shell straight up and over the tub to remove it.
