How to Remove a Water Line on a Refrigerator Door

Many side-by-side refrigerators manufactured in recent years feature a water dispenser on one of the doors to provide cold water at the touch of a button. The water for this feature comes from a supply line underneath the sink and flows through a flexible, clear plastic tube that runs up through the refrigerator door to the dispenser. If the plastic water line cracks or clogs, you can remove it from the door to troubleshoot, repair or replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Hex-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker that supplies the power to the appliance. Close the water supply valve.

    • 2

Remove the drip tray located underneath the water and ice dispenser on the refrigerator door. Turn the drip tray upside down and hold it against the refrigerator door directly under the water and ice dispenser. Insert the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver into the slots along the bottom of the dispenser control panel. Use the flat-blade screwdriver to pry open the control panel; the drip tray provides the leverage you need to get the panel open.

    • 3

Locate the switch assembly on the back of the dispenser control panel. Pull firmly on the switch connector to detach it from the wiring harness. Remove the dispenser control panel and set it to the side.

    • 4

Unplug the three wire connectors and the ground wires from the switch assembly subpanel located directly above the water and ice dispensers. Remove the hex-head screws securing the subpanel to the refrigerator door. Set the removed subpanel aside with the wiring side facing up.

    • 5

Open the refrigerator and freezer doors. Remove the two screws securing the grille to the bottom front of the refrigerator cabinet, using the flat-blade screwdriver. Pull the grille away from the cabinet and set it to the side along with the removed screws.

    • 6

Examine the exposed components to locate the water dispenser line on the bottom left-hand side of the refrigerator cabinet. Pull apart the plastic connectors and allow the water from the line to drain into a small pan. Slide the retaining nut off the end of the water line.

    • 7

Pull the water line through the wire tie that secures it to the bottom of the refrigerator. Cut the tie with a pair of scissors if you are unable to pull the line through.

Remove the two Phillips screws from the bracket that holds the water line to the dispenser. Reserve the bracket for reassembly. Pull the water line through the dispenser to remove it from the refrigerator door.
