How to Replace the Water Level Switch on a GE Profile Top Load Washer

GE Profile top-loading residential washing machines use an internal component known as a water level switch or pressure sensor to regulate the amount of water used to fill the washer tub. If the tub isn't filling properly or overflows during the washing cycle, a faulty water level switch is the most likely culprit. You can remove and replace the water level switch to correct the problem. Replacing the water level switch in a GE Profile requires the disassembly of the control console.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft towel
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Small flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE Profile washer from the grounded electrical outlet. Pull the machine away from the wall.

    • 2

Spread a soft towel on the top of the washer to protect the enamel from scuffs or scratches. Remove the two Phillips screws on the back of the control console. Fold the console down to rest on the towel.

    • 3

Remove the three Phillips screws from the protective cover on the control console. Lift the protective cover to reveal the water valve assembly, break resistor, fuse, RF choke and water level switch components.

    • 4

Locate the water level switch on the right-hand side of the water valve assembly. Look for a round, black component with a raised button in the center. Pull on the plastic connector to detach the water level switch wiring.

    • 5

Push back the three tabs holding the water level switch in place, using a small, flat-head screwdriver. Remove the water level switch from the control console assembly and detach the clear hose connected to the component.

    • 6

Line up the replacement water level switch with the three retaining tabs. Press down on the component until you hear it click into place. Plug the plastic wiring connector into the side of the switch and reattach the clear hose.
