How to Replace the Thermistor in a Dryer

The thermistor in a clothes dryer acts like a circuit breaker to stop the appliance if it is in danger of overheating. The thermistor switch trips open at a preset temperature as a safety feature. When the dryer cools, the switch in the thermistor closes and the appliance will work again. The thermistor may eventually wear out, requiring replacement. Installing a new thermistor takes less than an hour using simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer's electrical cord from the outlet. Slide the appliance away from the wall to reach the service panel on the back.

    • 2

Take out the screws holding the service panel in place and set the panel aside. Look to the right of the dryer to locate the blower, which resembles a cylinder with a fan motor. The thermistor is attached to the front of the blower.

    • 3

Pull the two wires gently from the contacts on the thermistor. Remember which contact connects to each wire.

    • 4

Unscrew the two screws holding the thermistor on the blower assembly. The thermistor is permanently attached to an oval-shaped metal plate.

    • 5

Set the new thermistor in position on the blower and secure the part with the two screws.

    • 6

Slide the connector on the end of each wire onto its respective contact on the new thermistor.

    • 7

Reattach the service panel to the back with the screws and screwdriver.

    • 8

Slide the appliance to its original position and plug in the power cord.
