How to Use a Dryer Exhaust to Heat a House

The heat pumped out of your dryer is often energy wasted to the outside, or a little or unused space in the garage. The extra heat and moisture could easily be circled around and added to an area of your home that needs a little more warmth and more importantly moisture. The heat from a dryer has been saturated with water from the clothes it has dried and is therefore even better for the cold, dry winter air in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the end of the exhaust hose. The dryer is vented from the back of the appliance to outside with a large, flexible, metal hose. It often goes underneath the house in a crawl space or the closest outside wall.

    • 2

Pull the exhaust hose back through the outside hole to the place in your home where you want the extra heat.

    • 3

Make a new hole to vent the exhaust hose. This air will be forced air and is often a little noisy, so a garage or out of the way spot is best.

    • 4

Attach a filter to the end of the hose. Even an old stocking with a rubber band or clamp around it,will keep the lint from the dryer exhaust from coming into your house.

Purchase an air-to-air product that is manufactured for the purpose of converting a clothes dryer to a green heat source for your home. These products are found online and only recommended for electric dryers. Gas dryers may have combustible byproducts built up in the exhaust.
