How Often Do I Change the Filter on a HEPA 200?

High Efficiency Particle Arrestor (HEPA) air purifiers were originally designed for industrial use in hospitals and nuclear plants. HEPA air purifiers are now commonly used in homes to filter such household allergens as dust and mite particles, pet dander, tobacco smoke and mold, which can help in cases of asthma and allergies.
  1. Types

    • The "200" designation on the HEPA usually refers to the amount of area the air purifier will effectively clean. Therefore, "200" refers to an area of 200 square feet. The frequency with which the filter for any HEPA air purifier needs to be changed depends in many cases on what the demands are on the purifier --- for example, where there is heavy smoking, strong odors or increased particle generation, the filter may have to be changed more often.

    Considerations

    • Most air purifiers have a HEPA filter, a carbon filter and often a foam pre-filter. It is recommended to check the foam pre-filter every few weeks. Depending on the make of air purifier, there may be an indicator light that alerts the user when it is time to change the filter.

    Frequency

    • The HEPA filter itself should may only have to be replaced every three to five years. The carbon filter can be changed every two to three months. If the pre-filter appears to have a large amount of dust or lint on it, then it should be cleaned; or it can be replaced after three months.
