Operation of HEPA Filter Air Purifiers

The word HEPA is an acronym that stands for high-efficiency particulate air. HEPA filters are composed of layers of densely packed fibers. Unlike regular filters, which act like sieves to filter out air particles, HEPA filters act more like magnets that draw particles into the filter. A HEPA air purifier is a home appliance that can be moved from room to room. Like many home appliances, it is designed to be user friendly.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions for your specific HEPA filter air purifier. Although the basic operation for these air purifiers is intuitive, each brand operates in a slightly different way.

    • 2

Place the purifier in a room where you experience frequent unpleasant odors or difficulty with allergies. Many purifier owners choose to locate their filters in the bedroom. The filter will work best if you do not move the purifier from room to room.

    • 3

Plug the purifier into an electrical outlet and turn on the unit. The purifier will immediately begin to remove particles from the air.

    • 4

Adjust the rate by which the filter removes particles based on the severity of allergies, dust or odors. The purifier will clean the air more aggressively if it is turned on high, but the motor will be louder. Most purifier rates are controlled by a dial.
