How to Clean Gauze-Type Air Filters

Gauze-type air filters often are added to cars as an aftermarket upgrade feature. The oil-impregnated cotton gauze on the filter traps dust and debris to keep it from entering the vehicle's air intake. Most gauze-type filters are pleated to increase their surface are and extend their usefulness. Oils and particulate matter can be flushed from a gauze air filter in a matter of minutes. A cleaned air filter can be oiled and reinstalled in the automobile.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the gauze type air filter. Most filters have a single bolt or wingnut holding them onto the intake manifold.

    • 2

Tap the top and bottom of the filter gently to break loose any large particles. Spray the inner and outer surfaces of the gauze pleats until the material is fully saturated. Wait 10 minutes for the solvents in the cleaner to break down the oil.

    • 3

Rinse the air filter thoroughly with slow-flowing cool water. Move the water stream up and down each pleat to force out the loosened debris. Reapply the filter spray cleaner and rinse again if the grime remains.

    • 4

Set the gauze type air filter in a clean and well-ventilated area to dry. Spray the filter oil onto the outer surfaces of the dried gauze material until it is evenly saturated. Reinstall the cleaned and oiled air filter.
