Oreck Air Purifier Ozone Safety

Air purifiers are advertised keeping allergens out of a household's atmosphere. But, even with large manufacturers such as Oreck, a consequence of this alteration of the air is ozone (See Reference 1).
  1. Function

    • Oreck provides air purifiers that use electrical charge science to bring allergens out of the air and have them drop to the ground or adhere to walls. This electrical charge process leaves ozone behind in the air, which is then inhaled.

    Significance

    • Consumer Search reports that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, found ozone to be harmful even in small amounts over an extended period of time. Air purifiers with ozone byproducts should only be used for short amounts of time to minimize the ozone emitted into the air.

    Considerations

    • Air purifiers that use HEPA filters emit no ozone and may be substituted for the electrostatic versions. Oreck does not manufacture these units and only offers the electrostatic version for its air purifiers.
