How Do I Connect a Dehumidifier to a Furnace Pump?

Adding a dehumidifier to your home is a great way to reduce humidity. Most dehumidifiers you'll find are portable and can be plugged into specific rooms of your home that are particularly humid, such as your basement. There are other dehumidifiers out there, however, that work on your entire home. These machines hook up to your furnace and suck excess moisture out of every room via your home's vents. Connecting a dehumidifier to a furnace is a straightforward process.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/4-inch PVC pipe with anti-siphon vent

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dehumidifier and place it beside the furnace close to the furnace's return air duct.

    • 2

Attach the 3/4-inch PVC pipe to the condensate drain outlet on the back of the dehumidifier. This outlet will be labeled. Use your hands to press the PVC pipe into the outlet; it should only go in a few inches.

    • 3

Run the PVC pipe to an outdoor drain. The length of the PVC pipe will be determined by how far away this drain is from your furnace.

    • 4

Place one end of one of the 10-inch ducts over the discharge air supply on the dehumidifier. Place the other end over the return air supply on the furnace.

    • 5

Place one end of the other 10-inch duct over the return air supply on the dehumidifier and the other end over the return air supply on the furnace.

    • 6

Use sealant to seal each of the connections you made.

    • 7

Plug in the dehumidifier and turn it on.
