Ideas for Candle & Floral Table Decorations

Whether planning a party, a family get-together or a simple dinner, candle and floral table decorations can add flair, design and color to a boring dinner table. Alone, candles or flowers can draw attention and enhance a room; however, together the two can drastically improve the surroundings and create charming conversation pieces. There are many ways to combine candle and floral table decorations. Some offer timeless style and others bring about a unique, modern feel.
  1. Floating Candle and Floral Decorations

    • A modern candle and floral table decoration idea is to place beautiful open flowers, along with floating candles, into a bowl or tray. Decide on the size container you would like for your floating candles and flowers and fill the bowl or tray 3/4 of the way with water. If using a shallow tray, only fill the tray halfway with water. Candles and short-cropped flowers do not need a large amount of water to float. Roses and lilies make great floating flower decorations. Carefully choose flowers that are already open, as flower buds may not float properly in the container. Arrange floating candles in the container with the flowers to form an attractive display.

    Pillar Candles and Floral Wreaths

    • Tall pillar candles can offer a bold statement as a table decoration or centerpiece. Choose three to five pillar candles in varying sizes and place the candles on the area you wish to decorate. Place the candles into a formation with the largest candles in back and the smallest candles in front. Make a floral wreath using your favorite flowers or simply place cut flower blooms around the pillar candles to form a wreath. Mix and match the types of flowers for a more daring statement and use colors that either complement or contrast the color, or colors, of the pillar candles.

Contemporary Country Candle and Floral Decorations

    • For informal lunches or down-home country dinners, try creating country candle and floral table decorations. Choose checkered dinner napkins or handkerchiefs and place the fabrics on the table where you wish your display to sit. Place bouquet of colorful wildflowers in clear or blue-tinted mason jars filled 3/4 of the way with water. Plates or trays with country themes make a wonderful display receptacle for the mason jars and should sit on top of the checkered dinner napkins, ensuring that the plate does not cover the entire napkin. The hostess can choose votive candles in varying country colors of blues, whites, greens or reds and arrange the candles on the plate surrounding the mason jar. This decorative display creates a simple, yet colorful, display with a country feel.

    Holiday Candle and Floral Displays

    • Simple, yet elegant, floral and candle displays often present as the most decorative table decorations. For Halloween, try arranging small pumpkins on the table in the area you wish to decorate and place fall flowers, such as chrysanthemums or asters, through the spaces in the pumpkins and around the pumpkin display. Arrange orange and black votive candles around the display or alternate the candles and flowers. For Christmas, position red, green and white taper candles in short, clear candleholders on the table. Use one large or several small containers of poinsettias in the middle of the candles. For a cleaner look, place cut poinsettias around the candleholders, alternating red and white poinsettia blooms.
