How to Set a Fan & Carbon Filter

Indoor air quality can be controlled using an activated carbon filter. By forcing air through an activated carbon filter, unwanted smells from pets and indoor gardens can be diminished significantly. Setting up a fan and carbon filter must be done in correctly to maximize the odor controlling effect. It isn’t difficult to set up correctly, but some basic steps must be followed for odor control to be effective. Once set up, the unwanted odors will gradually diminish as the activated carbon absorbs the volatile molecules responsible for the smell.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the exhaust fan inside the room with problematic odor. This could be a pet room or a dank basement.

    • 2

Attach the exhaust ducting to the outlet side of the exhaust fan. The ducting is a long, flexible tube that can move the air from the room to a specific location, like a chimney or another room.

    • 3

Place the activate carbon filter onto the input side of the exhaust fan. Commercial carbon filters made for indoor hydroponic gardens all conform to the same standard duct size, so you should be able to slip the carbon filter right onto the inlet of the exhaust fan.

    • 4

Turn on the exhaust fan. The air coming out from the other end of the ducting should have dramatically less odor than the room itself. Over time, the odor levels in the room should deteriorate as volatile odor molecules are exhausted and absorbed by the carbon.
