The Environmental Protection Agency warns that if you use tap water in your humidifier, mineral deposits may form in the humidifier. This can be dangerous because mineral deposits can be a breeding place for microorganisms.

      Unplug the humidifier from the power outlet.

      Pour the water from the humidifier tank. Use a bristled brush to clean it thoroughly with water, making sure to remove the mineral deposits or scales that have formed.

      Mix a 3-percent solution of hydrogen peroxide with water in the tank to disinfect it. You also can use a disinfectant recommended by your humidifier manufacturer.
