How to Decalcify a Humidifier

Decalcify your humidifier to remove mineral deposits caused by hard water. If you use city water without a softener, you may have noticed mineral deposits building up on your warm-mist humidifier's tank and heating element. These deposits can affect your humidifier's mist output, so clean them off regularly to keep your humidifier working correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug your humidifier before attempting to remove calcification.

    • 2

Wipe the heating element, if your model has one, daily with a soft cloth to remove calcification.

    • 3

Remove the water tank from the base and empty it out. Wash it by hand using warm water and a few drops of a mild liquid detergent. This ought to sufficiently wash the calcification from the tank walls. Some tanks are dishwasher safe and may benefit from being run through the dishwasher to loosen tougher pieces of calcification. Place the tank on the top rack.

Fill the water tank and water tray, if your model has one, with undiluted white vinegar on a weekly basis to remove calcification buildup, if daily cleaning is not completely effective. Remove the filter from the water tray, if it has one, before filling it with vinegar. Allow it to sit for half an hour. Dampen a soft cloth with vinegar and wipe any base surfaces with calcification. Empty the water tank and tray and rinse it out with warm water.
