Homemade Air Filtration

If your room tends to have a lot of dust or you have a lot of allergies, you can create your own air filtration system for minimal cost. Additionally, a homemade air filtration system will give you the added pride of creating your own effective and practical device.
  1. Basic Materials

    • The key to any air filtration system is to have a source to draw in the dirty air and force it through a filtration device, releasing the clean air into the environment. The ideal device for drawing in air is a fan. Obtain an inexpensive 20-inch box fan.

The other key component of your rudimentary air filtration system is a filter. There are many different types of filters, but 3M makes a 20-inch furnace filter. Make sure to purchase a good quality pleated filter. Finally, you will need a high quality duct tape for creating an airtight seal.

    Assembly

    • Assemble the fan according to its instructions. Then attach the filter to the front of the fan--the side from which the fan forces the air outward. Make sure to locate on the filter the direction from which air must flow to be filtered. Your filter will most likely have an arrow indicating the appropriate direction. Once you have the filter appropriately aligned, tape the filter to the fan, being careful to create an airtight seal.

    Advanced Systems

    • If you want to challenge yourself further, create an air filtration system from a higher-powered fan and actually create a custom made box to surround the fan and attached filters. With this system, you can even attach the filter to the ceiling of your room or shop to maximize filtration. Such an advanced air filtration system requires more technical skill to develop the appropriately sized box and attach an electrical on/of switch for turning the air filter on and off. These types of systems are more advantageous if you are installing it in a woodworking space or areas where there is increased particulate in the air.
