How to Clean an American Standard Electronic Air Cleaner

American Standard electronic air cleaners are home air purifiers. The air cleaners remove particles and contaminants in the air through a pre-filter and collection cells. The air cleaner not only makes the air safer within a home, they help people with respiratory illnesses breathe easier. Over time the pre-filter and collection cells need to be cleaned in order to retain their effectiveness. Indicator lights on the air purifier alert you when the components of the cleaner need to be cleaned.

Instructions

    • 1

Press and hold the "Power" button until all of the indicator lights turn on. The lights will turn off once the excess voltage in the unit is discharged.

    • 2

Unplug the power cord and turn the two latches to release the air cleaner door, which can be removed from the cleaner.

    • 3

Slide the pre-filter out of the unit and take it outside. The pre-filter is the insert located all of the way to the left inside the cleaner. You should take the pre-filter outside to ensure you don't spread particles and contaminants back in your home.

    • 4

Vacuum the pre-filter with a wand attachment to remove all particles and contaminants and slide it back into the cleaner.

    • 5

Pull the two collection cells out of the cleaner and take them outside. The collection cells are located on the right side of the cleaner. In the middle of the pre-filter and the collection cells is the field charger, which should not be removed from the machine.

    • 6

Clean the collection cell by vacuuming both sides of the cells with the wand attachment on the vacuum cleaner and slide the cells back into the cleaner.

    • 7

Replace the door by placing the tabs on the door in the slots on the cleaner, pushing the door closed and turning the latches to lock the door in place.

    • 8

Plug the power cord back into an electrical outlet and reset the filter timers by pressing and holding the "Reset" button until pre-filter indicator light goes out. Press and hold the "Reset" button a second time until the collection cell indicator light turns off.
