How to Clean a Dehumidifier Fin

A dehumidifier in your home can lead to a safer and healthier environment. Dehumidifiers remove excess moisture from the air. Reducing moisture lowers the chances of mold and mildew, which can only grow in moist environments. Keeping mold and mildew away will keep your family safe and healthy, as both can carry bacteria and fungus, and can worsen allergy and asthma conditions. Dehumidifiers are unable to do their jobs properly, however, if they are not cleaned at least every six months. Remove dirt and dust buildup from your dehumidifier fins to prevent contaminating the air even more.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the outer casing of the dehumidifier. Certain parts, such as the filter and grills of the machine, will just slide off, while others will require a screwdriver to remove. Consult the manufacturer's instructions, if necessary, to learn how to remove the parts from your specific machine.

    • 2

Scrub the fins and coils of the dehumidifier with a small, dry brush. This can be a toothbrush or a small wire brush as long as it fits into the small crevices around the fins. Rub away any dirt, dust and other buildup.

    • 3

Soak the bristles of your cleaning brush with warm water and scrub again, if necessary, to remove stubborn dirt or stains. LG Electronics technical support warns that introducing water into the interior of the dehumidifier can cause rusting, so use as little water as possible.

    • 4

Dry all parts with a rag or other cloth if you used water. Make sure everything is completely dry before returning the dehumidifier to service.

    • 5

Reassemble all parts and replace the casing of the dehumidifier.
