How to Troubleshoot a Honeywell Air Filter

Honeywell has multiple applications for air systems and makes air filters for fixed whole house and light commercial HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorbing) installations right down to tabletop air purifiers. The nature of the beast is that any kind of air treatment within a home will have a filter. Problems arise as air passes through the filter because the filter becomes dirty. Periodically the filters need to be cleaned or replaced.

Instructions

  1. Fixed Installations

    • 1

Check the HEPA Airwatch indicator. Your installer will likely have placed it near the thermostat. Look for a cigarette pack-sized box. It will be marked Honeywell Airwatch. The indicator will display an arrow next to any filters that need replacing.

    • 2

Perform a visual inspection of the filters. Replace the filters if they are plugged.

    • 3

Make sure the filters are installed correctly. There are air flow direction arrows on the pre-filter and HEPA filter.

    • 4

Make sure the filters are installed in their correct locations. The locations and the filters are marked. Make sure they match.

    • 5

Check the ductwork if you experience poor air flow and the filters are clean. Make sure all the vents are open.

    Tabletop Air Filter

    • 6

Check the filters for dirt if the unit becomes noisy or the filter change light comes on.

    • 7

Wash the pre-filter. The main filter is not washable---it needs replacing.

    • 8

Check that the protective wrap is removed from the new filter before installing it.

    • 9

Make sure you have proper airflow. The unit should be located at least 3 feet from any wall or furniture.
