Count the number of pleats. Pleats add to the filter's surface area. More surface area allows the filter more opportunity to pluck pollutants from the air.
Know the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV). MERV ratings indicate how efficient a filter is on a scale of 100 percent. Manufacturers rate pleated filters with a MERV of between 1 and 16, with higher numbers indicating greater efficiency. Most pleated filters operate at 20 percent to 35 percent efficiency and rate a 5 to 8 on the MERV scale. Some, however, provide 75 percent efficiency and come with a 12 MERV rating.
Compare filter thickness. Filter thickness ranges from 1 to 6 inches. Thin filters filter less dust and require changing more frequently. Conversely, thicker filters collect more dust and can go longer without being changed.
Compare costs. Name-brand filters cost more, but generic brands often offer the same MERV rating at a lower price. Shop around to get the best rating for your money.
