Effectiveness of Ionic Air Filters

As causes of allergies become better known and airborne pathogens and pollution make headlines, it is no surprise that air filtration systems are also growing in popularity. There is a hope that by using an air filtration system the chances of becoming sick will diminish or that the symptoms of allergies will be reduced. Ionic air filter systems are one of the top-selling types of air filtration systems and are proven in making a difference in air quality.
  1. How They Work

    • Ionic air filtration systems work on the simple principle that opposites attract. Negatively charged ions are released into the air by the system. These negative ions attract positively charged pieces of debris in the air, which are held to the negatively charged blade or grind inside the machine. The system is simple and requires do running fans to be effective.

    Maintenance

    • There is some minimum required maintenance for ionic filtration systems. Regular cleaning is a must for the system to be the most effective. The frequency of cleaning will depend on the air quality where the machine is placed. A machine in a store downtown will likely need to be cleaned more often than one in a home in the suburbs.

    Advantages

    • Ionic systems have some major advantages over other filtration systems. Since ionic systems do not require fans to be effective, they have no operation noise. This can be a major advantage if filtration is needed in a child's room or in an office setting where extra noise can be disruptive. Ionic systems have also been proven to kill bacteria and other microbes that may be in a home. Because of the ability of the system to draw these particles to the filtration system, it can succeed in killing their source.

    Effectiveness

    • Air filtration systems that use ionic technology are highly effective. Studies have shown that they have the ability to remove airborne dust by over 50 percent and remove almost 90 percent of bacteria from the air. The air quality is greatly improved with the use of this type of air purification.

Is Ionic Air Filtering the Right Choice?

    • Ultimately, the best choice depends on the needs of who is going to use the product. Ionic filtration offers a low noise and highly effective solution. However, it also can be an expensive product. Perhaps noise is not a factor that matters; in this case a lower-priced fan-based system may be a better solution.
