Rod Sprules, who recognized that coffee grounds have considerably more energy capacity than wood, created the alternative fire log called Java Log that is composed of coffee grounds and wax. Some of the advantages of using Java Log as an alternative to fire logs are that Java Logs emit only 22 percent of the carbon monoxide produced by wood fires and creates up to 68 percent less creosote than wood burning fires. Java Log, which is made from discarded coffee grounds of retail stores, also prevents over 12 million lbs. of coffee grounds from reaching landfills each year. Java logs burn for 3 hours and are available in boxes of six logs. As of 2010 the cost for a 30-lb. box of six Java Logs is $22.
Pine mountain logs are a greener alternative to wooden fire logs. Made of recycled sawdust and wax, Pine Mountain logs are proven to burn cleaner and emit less toxins into the atmosphere. Pine Mountain logs emit up to 78 percent less carbon monoxide and produce nearly 80 percent less combustible residue than wooden logs. Six lbs. of Pine Mountain logs burn as long as nearly 36 lbs. of ordinary fire logs. As of 2010 Pine Mountain logs are available in 6 lb. packages for $26.
Duraflame Stax is a fire log product composed of 100 percent natural and resource-efficient materials.
