How do I Use UV Light for Air Quality?

Ultraviolet can clean your air by killing microbial life, such as viruses, germs and bacteria, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A UV light system, however, cannot replace a proper air filtration system.
  1. Features

    • All ultraviolet light has germicidal effects, but UV-C light is best for killing microbes, according to Ultraviolet.com. UV-C light has wavelengths between 100 and 280 nanometers.

    Function

    • UV light prevents germs from spreading by destroying their genetic material. Since germs cannot pass on their DNA, they cannot multiply and spread their infection. When the germs try to divide and multiply, they perish.

    Tip

    • You can harness UV light with special lamps and certain portable UV-C devices. You must also make sure to shield yourself from UV light because it takes 8 to 24 hours to kill germs--enough time to cause damage to your skin.
