How Ionic Air Purifiers Work

Ionic air purifiers, also known as air ionizers, contain negative ion generators. Negative ions are molecules or atoms that have lost or gained an electron. The ionic air purifier uses plates instead of filters and can be set to low, medium and high power based on room size.
  1. Function

    • The ionic air purifier generates a stream of negative ions. These negative ions, in turn, attract the positive airborne allergens and dust particles in the air. When the negative ions join with the pollutants in the air, they become heavy and fall to the floor.

    Prevention/Solution

    • When the ionic air purifier causes the particles to fall to the floor, surfaces get dirty and dusty; room activity can stir up these particles again. Because of this, many ionic air purifiers are manufactured with electrostatic precipitators designed to trap the particles on metal plates that are oppositely charged.

    Significance

    • Negative ions generated from the ionic air purifier help increase oxygen intake. According to the Air Purifier Home website, studies have shown that an exposure to negative ions will improve breathing and air quality. The results will be an increase in energy, improved sleep and a reduction in depression.
