Refrigerant Information for Heil Air Conditioners

Heil is a company whose name brand air conditioning and heating products are found in homes and offices all over North America. Its air conditioning units use specific refrigerant coolants that are graded and accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Understanding the type your unit uses and the specifics of the coolant will help you understand how the unit operates.
  1. About Freon

    • In the past, air conditioning units were outfitted with R-12, R-11 and R-22, industry names for the coolants that to consumers may be better known as Freon, patented by the DuPont Company. Heil brand air conditioning units don’t use these coolants since EPA regulations and federal mandates prohibit the use of the chemical gases that are known to destroy the ozone layer, the layer that protects the planet from harmful ultraviolet rays. New Heil systems are outfitted with the modern Freon substitutes R-410A or R-404A.

    R-410A and R-404A

    • These two gases are accepted by the EPA and are sold to Heil and other air conditioning unit manufacturers as Puron, Suva 9100, AZ-20 or HP62, respectively. These coolant gases contain trace amounts hydrocarbon fluorocarbons, or HCFCs, chemical blends that have a proven minimalist negative effect on the ozone layer. These gases are interchangeable with one another, meaning if your Heil unit runs low on one coolant it can be refilled to capacity with the other.

    Heil Models

    • R-410A is Heil’s choice of coolant for models such as H4A3, 4, 8 and 6. These are the most common models for residences and small businesses. Due to their environmentally conscious properties, the uses of these two gases are what earns Heil models the Energy Star award for being up to EPA standards and using less energy than the models of some competitors.

    R-407C

    • In some cases, some older Heil models use R-407C, a “distant cousin” to 410 and 404A that is essentially the same type of gas blend but has the benefit of being able to retrofit older air conditioning models, a trait the other two gases cannot do. If you have an older Heil system model, a Heil technician would use this blend to refill levels instead of using the A types.
