Liquid Refrigerant Installation

Refrigerant, or coolant, is a combination of liquefied gasses that produce refrigerant effects for numerous appliances, including air conditioners and refrigerators. An air conditioner unit transfers the refrigerant from the holding reservoir on its main unit through piping to an inner unit where it is used to cool the area. The amount of refrigerant the main unit uses depends on its capacity. An insufficient amount of refrigerant in an air conditioner stops it from cooling the room like it should. If your air conditioner is a window unit, you can recharge the refrigerant yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your window air conditioner unit. Spread a sheet on the floor under the air conditioner. Remove the unit from the window and set it on the sheet.

    • 2

Locate the screws that secure the metal casing to the air conditioner unit; depending on the air conditioner model, they may be hidden along the inner corners of the casing. Remove the screws with a screwdriver. Slide the casing off the unit to expose a metal cylinder called a compressor.

    • 3

Look for two hoses on the unit’s compressor, paying attention to the location of the larger hose through which you will install the liquid refrigerant. Also, examine the two valves on the refrigerant can. Put on safety glasses and work gloves.

    • 4

Connect the larger valve, the service valve, to the larger hose. Join the smaller valve on the can of refrigerant, called the tap valve, to the smaller hose on the compressor.

    • 5

Plug the air conditioner back in. Turn the cooling to the coolest setting to initiate the refrigerant installation process. The refrigerant will begin to flow slowly into the system. Continue the charging process until the refrigerant can is emptied.

    • 6

Turn off the air conditioner and unplug the unit. Disconnect both the hoses from the valves.

    • 7

Place the case back on the air conditioner. Insert the screws into the holes and tighten these to secure the assembly. Set the air conditioner back in the window.
