Ductless Do-It-Yourself AC Wall Units

If your home does not have central air conditioning and you do not want the hassle of installing and removing window-mounted air conditioners every year, a ductless wall air conditioning unit may be an appropriate option. This type of air conditioner, which connects to an outdoor compressor via a conduit, can help cool a room without the need for window-mounting or extensive ductwork. Installing a ductless wall air conditioner is a relatively straightforward task.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of the outdoor compressor. The compressor should sit on a hard, level surface within 50 feet of the wall unit -- a patio slab can support the compressor on level ground.

    • 2

Place the compressor unit on the slab. Drill through the holes of the mounting tabs into the concrete with a drill equipped with a masonry bit. Tighten lag bolts through the mounting tabs with an impact wrench to secure the compressor to the slab.

    • 3

Mark a 3-inch-diameter circle on the interior wall where the indoor unit will sit. Cut the interior and exterior of the wall along the outline with a reciprocating saw to make a hole for the conduit connecting the indoor unit to the compressor.

    • 4

Feed the power cable, condensation drain, suction tubing and refrigerant tubing through the 3-inch-diameter conduit. Run the conduit through the hole to the indoor unit.

    • 5

Connect the condensation drain, refrigerant tubing and suction tubing to the indoor unit. Attach the indoor unit to the wall using the included screws and an electric screwdriver.

    • 6

Plug the compressor and indoor unit power cords into a nearby outlet. Turn on the indoor unit to test the ductless air conditioning system.
