How to Hook Up an HVAC Capacitor

Your HVAC system, or heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, controls the temperature in your home and runs on electricity. The HVAC system uses a capacitor to store electricity that it then redirects throughout the system. If your capacitor stops working, your condenser may start making noises or the motor and compressor in the condenser may fail. Avoid expensive repairs to your HVAC system by installing a new capacitor yourself rather than depending on an air conditioner repairman to install the part for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power to your HVAC system. HVAC systems differ, but the power box for the HVAC system is generally on an exterior wall of your home near the condenser unit.

    • 2

Unscrew and open the electrical access panel on the condenser.

    • 3

Disconnect the wiring on your existing capacitor. Unscrew and remove the metal housing holding the capacitor in place.

    • 4

Remove the old capacitor. Replace it with the new capacitor.

    • 5

Screw the metal housing back in place over the new capacitor. Reconnect the wiring to the terminals on top of the new capacitor.

    • 6

Screw the condenser's electrical access panel back in place. Turn the power to the HVAC system back on.
