How to Install Evaporative Coolers In the Window

Evaporative coolers cool the air by blowing air over a water-soaked pad. This method works well in dry climates in many parts of the western United States. According to the United States Department of Energy, evaporative coolers use about one-quarter of the energy consumed by central air conditioning. If you only need to cool a small area, a window-mounted evaporative cooler will do the job. You don't need any special tools to install such a cooler in your window.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the correct location of the support brackets for your cooler. The installation manual provided with your cooler will instruct you how many inches below the windowsill to mount the brackets. Measure and mark the location of the screws for the brackets. Drill pilot holes at each mark to make it easier to start the screws. Screw the brackets securely into the wall.

    • 2

Screw the 2-by-4 onto your window ledge, using the wood screws. This provides additional support for the cooler.

    • 3

Open the window. Set the evaporative cooler onto the brackets and rest the vent on the 2-by-4 you attached to the windowsill. Lower the window until it rests on top of the evaporative cooler. Expand side panels on the cooler to close the remaining gap in the window.

    • 4

Locate the water line closest to your cooler. Attach a saddle valve to the water line. Twist the valve until the mechanism inside the valve pierces the water line and taps into it.

    • 5

Insert plastic or copper water line into the other end of the valve and tighten. Run the line to the water connection on the evaporative cooler. Slip a pipe clamp onto the water line and then insert the line into the connection on the cooler. Tighten the pipe clamp with the screwdriver until the line is firmly connected.

    • 6

Attach the water hose to the overflow drain line of the cooler and uncoil the hose so that any overflow drains away from your home's foundation.

    • 7

Plug the cooler into an outlet inside the house.
