Amana AC Help

Amana air conditioners come with varying seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER, ratings, which indicate the overall energy efficiency of the unit. Higher SEER ratings mean higher efficiency. In addition, Amana air conditioners come with a compressor sound blanket, high and low pressure switches and a limited warranty. However, calling Amana for service may not be needed if some basic troubleshooting methods are performed when problems are encountered.
  1. Power

    • The place to start when an Amana air conditioner is not working is the power cord. Make sure the power cord is firmly plugged into a working outlet, and check the power switch on the air conditioner to ensure the power is turned “On.” Replace the circuit breaker if needed, and find the red reset button on the main control panel, which may be accessed by opening the front panel on the unit. If the button is sticking out, push the button back in to reset.

    Thermostat

    • Once you have verified there is power to the air conditioner, check the thermostat if the air conditioner isn’t running. The thermostat should be set to “Cool” or “Auto,” and the temperature should be set to a reading below the current outside temperature. For better cooling, close the exterior doors and windows in the home so that warm air does not enter and cold air does not escape.

    Air Filter

    • The air filter needs to be cleaned regularly to help the air conditioner maintain an accurate temperature and operate efficiently. Turn off the Amana air conditioner and open the main panel to remove the filter. Clean the filter with soapy water and rinse well. Let the filter air dry in a cool, dry location, and slide the filter back into the air conditioner filter housing. Latch the main panel closed and restore power.

    Icing

    • If the Amana air conditioner seems to be iced up or the largest copper line that extends out of the condenser is warm, the air conditioner compressor line inside the unit is likely frosted over. Turn off the air conditioner and allow all the ice to melt from the unit. Wipe the unit clean with a towel and restore power. If the ice returns, the air conditioner may be low on Freon, in which case the unit should be inspected and serviced by Amana.
