How to Install Vent Pipe for a Forced Air Heater

Forced air heaters must be ventilated properly so that air circulates through them and gas doesn't build up in your home. Usually, you have to install a vent pipe from the heater to your chimney. You can install the vent pipe yourself; however, if you aren't comfortable doing so, you should call a service technician to do it for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the draft hood. Make sure the hood is centered over the vent hole. The legs of the hood should be straight.

    • 2

Attach an adapter to the vent hole if it is designed for a smaller pipe. For example, if you have 4-inch pipe but the vent hole is meant for 3-inch pipe, you can use an adapter. However, if your pipe is smaller than the vent hole, don't use an adapter; get the correct size pipe.

    • 3

Install a horizontal piece of pipe between the draft hood and the chimney. Secure the pipe to the pipe connection using three sheet metal screws.

    • 4

Build the pipe upward into the chimney entrance. Attach each piece of pipe to its pipe connection with sheet metal screws.
