How to Unfreeze a Frigidaire Window Heat Pump

Frigidaire-brand window-unit air conditioners provide cool air and heat year-round. Even when the heat function is operating correctly, it’s possible that your Frigidaire unit can freeze up, forming ice on the outside. This can happen if your refrigerant fluid leaks, if the filter is clogged or if an evaporator fan malfunctions. In extreme cases, the defrost function won’t work. The best way to defrost it is to turn off the unit, let it sit, and wait for a technician. But if you are in a hurry, you can speed up the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Frigidaire window air conditioner.

    • 2

Disconnect the unit from the window. Some Frigidaire models will require you to adjust sliding brackets to do this, while others require unscrewing the unit from a preinstalled frame.

    • 3

Set your air conditioner on top of the towel with the air fins facing you and tilted downward. For significant buildup, use multiple towels or a drip pan.

    • 4

Turn on the fan and point it toward the frozen section. If there is excessive ice buildup, use a hair dryer at the lowest setting and hold it in place. Do not place it close to the ice or the runoff; you can risk electric shock.

Examine the air conditioner fan for any ice buildup or ice obstructions. If it is free of ice, plug your unit back in and select the “fan only” setting to finish unfreezing it.
