How to Convert Shoji Screens Into Closet Doors

Remove the existing door or doors from your closet. Measure the width of the closet door opening from the inside edges of either side.

Select either one shoji screen that measures the width equal to your measurement or two that both measure half of the width. Place one of the shoji screens, if you're using two, against the frame of the closet with the right side facing outward. Line the outer left edge of the screen with the outer right edge of the closet frame.

Place a 1-inch butterfly hinge flatly over the shoji screen frame, overlapping to the closet frame. The center of the hinge should rest just between the closet frame and screen. Place the hinge approximately 6 inches from the top of the shoji screen.

Drill a 1/2-inch screw into each hole provided by the hinge you're holding in place. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with another hinge approximately placed 6 inches from the bottom of the shoji screen. If necessary, repeat this process with a second shoji screen on the other side of the door.
