How to Start a PTH490D Resistor Compressor

The PTH490D is a resistor relay used to aid in powering compressors found inside several refrigerator brands, including Maytag. The PTH490d is manufactured by Matsushita. If the refrigerator starts making a clicking noise, seems to not be cooling properly or if there is a puddle of water gathered on the floor, it is possible a new PTH490D needs to be installed and started. Purchase a replacement at a home appliance wholesaler or order it directly from the manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the refrigerator out from the wall. Ask a friend to help, if needed. Unplug the refrigerator to avoid electric shock.

    • 2

Remove the lower grill panel on the refrigerator with a Phillips screwdriver. Loosen and take out the retaining screws that hold the panel in place. They are located at each of the four corners. Pull the panel away.

    • 3

Use a hand vac to remove excess dirt and dust before beginning work.

    • 4

Remove the wires from the resistor terminals with a Phillips screwdriver. Set the new resistor in place, attach the wires to the respective terminals and tighten them with the screwdriver.

    • 5

Plug the refrigerator back into the wall. The resistor will start and cycle upon electrical contact and should power up the compressor.

    • 6

Replace the grill panel, insert the retaining screws and tighten them with the screwdriver.
