How to Convert a Cooling Tower to a Heat Exchanger

A cooling tower is a heat exchanger that uses evaporation to cool the environment. Hot water circulates through the tower and is sent through packing where it is ventilated with a fan. The hot water partially evaporates, cooling the water while dissipating heat into the air. The cooled water is circulated through pipes to cool the building. To heat, the fan ventilation shuts off and the water circulating through the building stays hot. Setting the thermostat for the unit determines the cooling or heating function of the tower.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the thermostat on the outside of the cooling tower/heat exchanger. The thermostat is connected to sensors on the pipes that detect the temperature of the circulating water.

    • 2

Set the cooling setpoint. When the temperature rises above the set cooling point, the tower is directed to cool and the ventilation fan switches on. The cooling process continues until the sensor indicates the temperature has gone below the cooling setpoint. Refer to the manual for your specific unit to determine the correct way to set your thermostat.

Set the heating setpoint. When the temperature rises below the set heating point, the tower directs the heat and the ventilation fan will switch off. The heating process continues until the sensor indicates the temperature has risen above the heating setpoint. Refer to your unit's manual to determine the correct way to set your thermostat.
