One of the most important parts of properly caring for the air conditioner is to clean the air filter to help prevent buildup of dirt and dust that can impede airflow and reduce overall cooling. Disconnect power to the air conditioner and allow it to stop completely before cleaning. Remove any screws holding the front access panel and open the front access panel. Pull slowly up on the filter inside the unit to remove. Wash the filter with warm water and allow it to air dry before replacing it in the air conditioner.
Cleaning the grilles on the air conditioner will help keep the air moving properly through the air conditioner, resulting in more effective cooling. Wipe the grilles on the front of the air conditioner with a clean, damp cloth to remove extra dirt and debris. Do not block the grilles with furniture, drapery, toys or any other objects that could prevent proper air flow.
If you hear or see water dripping from the air conditioner, disconnect the power and check the drain pan. If there is water in the drain pan, which can be caused by high humidity or rain, remove and empty the drain pan. Dry it with a towel and replace it in the unit. If the drain pan cannot be removed or emptied, check the drain and make sure there is nothing blocking the way and preventing it from draining properly.
Proper use of the thermostat will help keep the air conditioner operating properly. It is best practice to set the thermostat approximately 10 degrees below the current air temperature. Set the air conditioner to "Cool" and the fan to "Auto" to allow the unit to operate as needed and turn it off when you're won't be using the room for extended periods of time. Keep doors and windows shut to help keep the cool air from the air conditioner inside the room.
