Why Does My Window Air Conditioner Blow Water in the House?

Window air conditioners remove humidity and cool the air. The removed humidity forms water during a condensation process and commonly is drained outside the home. A number of problems can lead to the water instead ending up in the home. With the action of the fan this can lead to water blowing into the house.
  1. Improper Slope

    • Install window air conditioners so the unit slopes away from the inside of the home. This allows the condensation that accumulates on the coils of the air conditioner to run down to the base of the unit and then back away from the home.

    Plugged Drains

    • The drain holes in the base of the air conditioner unit are commonly in the back of unit. If the holes become plugged with dust, bugs or other items the water builds up in the base of the air conditioner. If the water reaches a high enough level the fan action can spray the water into the living quarters.

    Plugged Filters

    • Dirty or plugged filters reduce the efficiency of the air conditioner and can prevent water from reaching the drain holes. This can lead to water blowing into the home. Clean the filters regularly to maintain the efficiency of the air conditioner.

    Excessive Indoor Humidity

    • The higher the indoor humidity the harder the air conditioner has to work and the greater the chance of water accumulations that can be blown into the home. Never operate a home humidifier while an air conditioner is in use and limit activities such as cooking, clothes washing and dish washing that add humidity to the home environment. Adding a dehumidifier lowers indoor humidity in situations where the air conditioner is not able to cope with the humidity issues.
