Easy Ways to Clean Air Conditioners

Air conditioners need periodic maintenance that involves simply cleaning the filter on window units to a little more work on central air conditioning units. Establishing a routine cleaning schedule pre- and post-season cuts down on the wear and tear of the units and prevents the need for repairs.
  1. Window Unit Filter

    • Window air conditioners are easy to maintain and usually involve keeping the filter clean. A dirty filter does not allow proper air flow which affects the efficiency of the unit. When the air flow is constricted it has the potential to bypass the clogged filter and carry dirt particles directly onto the evaporator coil. Most window unit filters are located directly behind the front grill. Use a screwdriver if necessary, or just pop out the grill to get at the filter. Some filters are disposable and need to be replaced, while others can be cleaned with soap and water. Use de-greasers for really tough grime.

    Inside the Window Unit

    • While you have the cover off the front of the air conditioner to clean the filter it is a good idea to check the evaporator. This is located directly in back of the filter and resembles fins. Use a microfiber brush or soft cloth to clean these fins as they are constructed of aluminum that bends very easily. Use this same method to clean the condenser fins which are located at the rear of the unit.

    Central Air Conditioning Indoors

    • The inside unit, whether it is the furnace or an air handler system, has a filter that needs to be cleaned or replaced. Generally as a rule if your filter is in your furnace, replace it twice a year, at the beginning of the cooling season and again at the beginning of the heating season. Air handler cabinets may have replaceable filters or reusable ones which can be removed and cleaned. Clean these filters in the same manner that you would as described for the window unit filter.

    Central Air Conditioning Outdoors

    • The outdoor unit is susceptible to weather conditions and blowing debris. It is important to keep the outdoor condenser unit clear of twigs, leaves and other dirt and debris. Before working on the outdoor unit turn off any power to it. Clear any weeds away from the outdoor cabinet to maintain proper airflow. Remove the access panels by popping them out or using a screwdriver if appropriate. Clean the blower fans with water and a rag and vacuum up any debris inside on the bottom of the unit. Use a soft brush to clean away dirt and debris from the around and in between the coils. It is recommended that you clean the outdoor unit twice a year, at the beginning and the end of the cooling season.
