How to Cool & Heat a Room Without Installing Duct Work

You do not need to install expensive and labor-intensive duct work to heat or cool a room. With some applications, such as converting an out-building or storage shed for use as an office or playroom, connecting duct work may not even be a viable option, since you would also need a heating and cooling system separate from the main building. The solution for cooling and heating a single room is to use portable air conditioners and space heaters. Measure the size of the room so you'll know the heating and cooling requirements.

Measure the length and width of the room, multiplying the two numbers together to determine the square footage. For example, a room 10 feet wide by 12 feet long is 120 square feet.

Buy a portable air conditioner and a space heater with a BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating sufficient to cool or heat the square footage of your space. The BTU rating is almost always printed on the product packaging. For example, a portable air conditioner with a 10,000 BTU rating can typically cool a 300 square-foot room, so a 10,000 BTU unit provides more than enough power to cool a 120 square-foot room.

Plug in the portable air conditioner or space heater power cords, depending on the season, and adjust the temperature to the desired level using the buttons on the control panel. Portable appliances often come with remote controls that also allow you to adjust temperature and even set the unit on a timer from the comfort of your chair.
