Cost Effective Ways to Run an Air Conditioner

During hot summer months, your home can quickly become uncomfortably warm, making even the simplest activities a challenge. An air conditioner, whether a window or central unit, is the usual solution for cooling off the space, but running it all summer can raise your electric bill through the roof. However, there are several simple ways to get the most out of your air conditioner while saving energy and keeping costs down.
  1. Turn It Off

    • It may seem like a simple idea, but homeowners often forget to turn off an air conditioning unit in rooms that aren't used frequently. If you routinely forget to turn off your unit, a programmable thermostat may help. You can program the thermostat to adjust to changes in the temperature automatically so it turns itself on and off as necessary. According to the U.S. Environmental Protect Agency and U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star website, using a programmable thermostat correctly can save you as much as $180 on energy costs each year

    Change Air Filter Regularly

    • Using a high-quality air filter ensures that your air conditioner operates more efficiently, but you must replace it regularly as well. During the summer months when the unit receives heavy use, change the filter at least every three months. However, if the filter appears dirty after only a month, replace it. When the filter is dirty, there is a reduction in airflow to the air conditioner, so the unit must work harder to cool the space. Replacing it regularly ensures that less energy is used by the unit and prevents costly repairs in the future.

    Use With Fan

    • Using your air conditioner in tandem with a ceiling or portable fan can help cool your home more efficiently. Unlike an air conditioner that only releases cool air into a room, a fan's rotations allow it to circulate air throughout a room. The fan may be able to create a draft of cool air from the air conditioner throughout an entire floor of your home. If you have a central air conditioning system, using it in conjunction with a fan may allow you to raise your thermostat as much as 4 degrees without making your home any warmer, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

    Cover Windows

    • Make sure to cover any windows in an air-conditioned room to block sunlight. Solar energy can easily warm a room and cause your air conditioner to have to work harder to cool off the space. Any kind of blinds, drapes or shades are effective, but white coverings are the best option, because they reflect sunlight away from your house to keep it cooler. Make sure to keep the coverings pulled down or closed on west- and south-facing windows during the day when the sun is positioned to hit these areas.
