How to Get Cold Air Upstairs From Air Conditioning

If you're like many people, you rely on air conditioning to keep yourself and your home cool in the summertime. However, when your AC fails to provide measurable comfort in the upper levels of your home, being upstairs can become an overheated and miserable experience. Plus, you may feel that money is being wasted running an AC unit that isn't providing full benefits. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to redirect air flow around the house that will help keep your upstairs cool during the summer months.

Instructions

  1. Restrict the Flow of Outside Air

    • 1

Close all external doors and windows.

    • 2

Have any broken windows or doors repaired by a professional to prevent air leakages.

    • 3

Close window blinds and pull draperies shut to prohibit warm sunlight from shining in.

Allow Cool Air to Properly Circulate

    • 4

Place a floor fan near the staircase and turn on downstairs ceiling fans to propel the movement of cool air.

    • 5

Open internal upstairs doors to allow for the adequate circulation of cool air.

    • 6

Remove dust and dirt that may have accumulated in air registers.

    • 7

Move objects that are blocking air registers. Rearrange furniture, if necessary, to keep the area directly in front of air registers clear.
