Ways to Mount a Window Air Conditioner

If research by climate scientists at Stanford University is right, scorching summers may very well be the norm in at least half the world for decades to come. While fans provide mild relief on hot, sticky days, air conditioners are more effective. Installing an air conditioner in a window requires attention to detail. There are ways to mount an air conditioner to ensure it won't fall and cause damage to anything or anyone below.
  1. Bracketing

    • Choose a mounting bracket that's strong and wide enough to support your air conditioner. Hang the bracket outside by screwing the lower part of it into the facade of your home below your window. Screw the upper tray that your air conditioner will sit on, into the window frame. Test the mounting bracket by trying to shake it free from the screws. It won't move if the screws are securely placed.

    Fitting

    • Drill holes into the inner frame of the window that are congruent to the holes on the upper mounting panel of your air conditioner. With the cool part facing into your room and the hot part resting outside on the bracket, position your air conditioner in the window frame. Close the window down on top of your air conditioning unit as tightly as possible. Slide out the accordion sides so that they fill the entire width of the window frame.

    Mounting

    • Insert screws into the holes along the top and bottom mounting panels of your air conditioning unit and fasten them tightly to the window frame. Secure small angle brackets to the opposite corners of the upper window frame that stop the lower frame from rising and releasing its grip on the air conditioning unit.

    Foam Stripping

    • Measure the width of the window frame. Using scissors, cut a piece of foam weather stripping that fits from end to end. Peel off the foam's adhesive backing and lay it along the gap between the lower window frame and the pane behind it to create an airtight room.
