Check the cord to make sure it is securely plugged into the wall outlet, if the A/C does not operate at all. Also, verify that the unit is not in the "Off" position.
Increase the temperature setting on the A/C if the air flowing from the unit is warm and not cooling down the room.
Verify the outdoor temperature through your local weather forecast if ice forms on the A/C's cooling coils. Cold outside air can cause these formations on the unit. Set the A/C to "Fan-Only" to keep a steady circulation of air instead of using the cooling functions. Also, consider lowering the temperature if the unit is set to an extremely cold temperature.
Clean the A/C's air filter if the unit is operational, but failing to adequately cool the room. Close the vents on the A/C to help it to best cool the room. Check for excess heat from other room appliances, including floor-model TVs and computers. Seal and insulate windows and doors.
Listen for a mechanical pattern if you hear and feel strange noises and vibrations from the A/C. The compressor will turn on and off with regularity. A/Cs remove humidity from the air in the surrounding room, and this conditioning process produces excess running water.
