How to Set the Settings on an AC Window Unit

Owners manuals are one of those things that people carefully save in the the kitchen junk drawer and then, often lose forever. Never fear. Despite the lack of one, you can soon have air-conditioned comfort as you work step-by-step through the operational controls on your window air conditioning unit. Whether your AC appliance is from the Nixon administration or just purchased last week, they all work on the same principle and provide the same basic choices to adjust the settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the air conditioning unit is plugged into an appropriate and grounded outlet.

    • 2

Locate a larger dial button with "On" or "Power" for older units or the universal power button symbol (a circle partially bisected by a vertical bar) on newer models. Some units may have an "On/Off" toggle switch. Turn on your air conditioner using the identified power button.

    • 3

Look for a cooling control button. Some units have a dial that is turned to the desired setting, such as "Cool," "Cooler" and "Coldest." Newer models have digital LED displays of the target temperature where you use up or down arrows to adjust the temperature you prefer. Some dials simply range from a tiny bar of blue (presumably to represent cold) all the way to many taller bars of blue. Set the unit around the middle of your choices to begin.

    • 4

Look for a fan control button. Some units have a separate control for the speed of the fan, from barely a soft puff all the way to a strong breeze from across the room. Set according to your preference, the size of the area you are cooling and the rate at which you want the area cooled. Note: if the notation "Fan" is on the temperature control dial, it usually denotes just the circulation of air without any cooling.

    • 5

Look for a "Power Saver" option and use it depending upon your preference and budget. Some newer models have a "Sleep" function which allows you to fall asleep in cool comfort. The unit then decreases its cooling effect and electrical power use while you are asleep.

    • 6

Locate the manufacturer and model of your air conditioning unit. This information is typically on the front of the machine. Your model number is not the unique serial number etched in metal on the back of the unit.

    • 7

If still necessary, Google your air conditioner's "Manufacturer" and "Model Number" to ascertain if a copy of the manual is available online. If you are unable to locate the manual online, try to locate a manual by the same manufacturer and obtain the customer service telephone number. If the manual you have located is for a machine similar enough to your unit, it can provide you with basic instructions until you obtain a copy of your specific manual.
