How to Change the High-Heat Setting on a Thermostat

A thermostat is a temperature-sensitive device that controls a furnace and air conditioner to keep the temperature at a specific level. If the temperature rises above a certain setting, the thermostat signals the air conditioner to come on, lowering the temperature. Likewise, if the temperature drops below a certain setting, the furnace switches on to raise the temperature to the high setting on the thermostat. You can adjust this setting on a programmable thermostat at any time. The exact steps to change this setting vary by model, but the process is basically the same.

Instructions

  1. Digital Thermostats

    • 1

Remove the thermostat's front cover to gain access to the control panel, if necessary.

    • 2

Set the thermostat's system switch to "HEAT."

    • 3

Press the up or down arrow to adjust the heat setting to whatever temperature you choose. Replace the cover on the thermostat.

    Mechanical Thermostat

    • 4

Locate the lever on the side or underneath of the thermostat.

    • 5

Slide the lever up or down, if it is on the side of the thermostat, to adjust the high-heat setting for the thermostat needle. Slide the lever to the left or right, if it is on the bottom, to adjust the setting.

    • 6

Rotate the dial to the left or right, if the thermostat is round and has a dial on its front, to adjust the high-temperature setting for the thermostat needle.
