Dirty filters in an air conditioning system can reduce the airflow through the system causing it to work inefficiently. Replace any disposable filters in the system and clean permanent air conditioner filters during the annual checkup. You should change the filters in a central air conditioning unit every few months, but change it during the annual maintenance check to start the hot season with a clean, new filter.
You should make sure the vents and air ducts are clean and ready for use at least once a year. You should dust the vents in your home regularly, but an annual cleaning of the ductwork ensures there are no obstructions in the system. Remove leaves and debris from the exterior of the air conditioning unit as well. The condenser must be free of obstructions to work properly so remove any items that may be stored around the air conditioning unit.
Before the first hot day of the season when you really need your air conditioner, run it to be sure it is functioning properly. Let the air conditioner run for several minutes to be sure it is working.
An air conditioner does not use Freon to run or cool the home. The levels should remain consistent under ideal conditions, but if the unit has a leak, the levels could become low. Lower levels of Freon can indicate a problem or leak in the air conditioning unit and will require the services of an air conditioning technician.
Schedule an air conditioning technician to check the electrical components on the unit, maintain the motors, inspect the heat exchanger and check the airflow on the unit. An air conditioning technician can replace or repair the electrical components, heat exchanger and evaporator coil on your air conditioning system.
