Problems With Air Conditioners That Stop Blowing Cold Air

An air conditioner regulates the temperature of the room with an adjustable thermostat, cooling and fan settings. After the unit is installed, you might experience problems with the unit blowing warm or non-cool air, which can be fixed with basic settings adjustments and maintenance.
  1. High Thermostat

    • The object of the air conditioner's cooling feature is to reduce the current temperature of the room it's cooling. If the thermostat isn't set low enough, the air conditioner unit stops blowing cold air but might continue to circulate the air, depending on the setting. For instance, if the thermostat is set to 80, but the temperature in the room is also 80, the unit will fail to blow cold air once the temperature reading of the room is noted by the air conditioner to be 80. Turn the thermostat down to a level lower than room temperature to activate the cooling feature of the air conditioner.

    Blocked Air Filter

    • Each air conditioner contains an air filter, which catches impurities and dirt and prevents it from entering the internal workings of the air conditioner. If the air filter is blocked and overdue for a cleaning, air fails to circulate properly through the unit. Pull open the front grill of the air conditioner unit, and remove the air filter from its place. Run warm water on both sides of the filter until all blockage is cleared. Dab the filter gently on both sides with a towel or lay it out until it's fully dry. Reinsert the air filter into its spot behind the grille and close the grille.

    Hot Room

    • If a room is very hot and the air conditioner is blowing what might feel like warm air, give the air conditioner more time to cool the room. Hot rooms require more time to cool than warm or cooler rooms.

    Obstacles

    • Sometimes air conditioners, especially window unit models, can be blocked or hindered by drapes or curtains. If the intake grille is covered by fabric, it fails to suck in air from the room through the grille. In like fashion, if the curtain blocks the louvers or outlet vents, cool air fails to make it from the unit into the room past the cloth barrier. Ensure all curtains are pulled completely away from the front of the unit. If furniture is pushed too close to the unit, airflow is blocked by this as well; see that all furniture is clear of the front of the air conditioner unit.
