How to Keep a Trane Central Air Unit That Was Made in 1988 Clean & Running Smooth

With the motto, "It's hard to stop a Trane," it is no wonder some Trane air conditioning units last for several decades. If you purchased a Trane central air unit back in 1988 and do not wish to invest in a new one at this time, the goal is certainly to keep your unit clean and running smooth. Routine maintenance on your part, such as changing the filter monthly and keeping the outdoor unit free of debris, are crucial to your air conditioner operating properly. Trane also recommends having a professional service technician perform an annual inspection prior to the cooling season, giving your unit a thorough cleaning to keep it in shape for another summer.

Change your filter once a month. Turn off the Trane air conditioner unit. Remove the filter tray from the unit and take out the dirty filter. Replace with a new filter and return the filter tray to the unit. Throw the old filter in the trash.

Keep your outdoor unit clear of debris. Remove any leaves, sticks or other items that have fallen on the outdoor unit. Cut back any shrubs or lawn growth near the unit.

    • 3

Inspect vents regularly and remove any dust. Move any items blocking the vents and limiting air flow.

    • 4

Give your older unit a break by running it less frequently. Set the thermostat to as high a temperature as you can tolerate, but remain comfortable. Add insulation and repair any cracks or spaces under doors and windows allowing hot air inside. Keep heat-producing appliances and furnishings, such as televisions and light fixtures, out of the close vicinity of the thermostat.

Schedule an authorized service technician to perform an annual inspection as recommended by Trane. Have the unit thoroughly cleaned and tested to verify all parts are working properly and the unit is cooling efficiently. Make the appointment for service just prior to the cooling season in your region.
