How to Change a Condenser Coil in a Central AC

Some air conditioning systems include an evaporator coil. In the case of older split systems, or ones that have failed, evaporator coils will need to be replaced with a condenser coil. For new systems that need a replacement condenser coil, you will be able to find the old one within the condensing unit of the central AC unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to your central AC unit. Turn off the circuit breaker that it's connected to.

    • 2

Find the condenser coil you're changing or the evaporator coil that you're replacing with a condenser coil. This element is most likely located in the central AC unit's main cabinet.

    • 3

Open the access door of the AC unit's cabinet. In some systems, this can require removing clamps or screws.

    • 4

Remove the coil you're replacing. Check the unit's manual to be sure of the exact location as it can vary. Cut the ends with a tube cutter.

    • 5

Install the new coil. Connect again by soldering the lines with a propane torch. Some new coils can be purchased that require only heating, which means you will not have to apply solder to connect the coil.
